Nelson Elhage's interesting description of the Stripe developer environment circa the late teens.
A key insight is that they used centrally-managed developer environments, at a high friction with local development, in order to smooth the way for onboarding many new developers.
It doesn't seem like a pleasant way to work to me, but it must have been necessary for them.
